Choosing a qualification
It can be hard to choose between the huge range of qualifications available today. Different types of qualification suit different people.
- Do you want to do a work-related (vocational or occupational) course? Choose NVQ's, GNVQs, BTEC, Vocational A levels, and Professional Qualifications OR
- Would you prefer a school subject, like English or a new subject like sociology, psychology, or economics? Choose GCSE's, Entry level or Access courses, AS or A2 levels, Higher education degrees or a postgraduate degree.
Qualification Progression Routes
Have a look at the Qualifications Framework to see how you can move up the levels and do different types of qualifications as you progress through learning and work.
For a clear outline of Qualifications Progression Routes, also think about the following:
- Do you prefer doing coursework or exams?
- Will the qualification get you where you want to go? If you're thinking of university check that the subjects you choose fit the University's entry requirements. Visit Ucas to find out more.
These are just a few things to think about but you’re not alone making choices. Talk to teachers, parents or your Personal Adviser. Find out the facts before you decide!
Do you know how a GNVQ compares with a GCSE? There are lots of changes to the way qualifications compare. The National Qualifications Framework sets out the levels at which qualifications are recognised. Visit qcda to find out more.
The Diploma
The Diploma is an exciting qualification designed to give students valuable skills for life. It involves hands-on learning which is fun, exciting and teaches the skills you will need in the future.
Diplomas have been developed by schools, colleges, universities and employers. They are set to join the three main education options – alongside GCSEs, A-Levels and Apprenticeships; they can take students on to college, university or the career of their choice.
Please visit Wayahead Warrington, Wayahead Cheshire East, Connexions direct and The National Youth Agency for more information on Diplomas.
Gap Year!
You may decide to take a year out in between studies to help you develop new skills and increase your confidence. This can also contribute to how you progress in your career. Have a look at The 'Taking a Year out' page for a list of useful contacts.
