Housing

Leaving home or care

Whatever age you are, leaving home is a big step. You need to make sure you’ve made the right decision and explored all the options before you leap! There are lots of people who can help you – check out the sources of help and links for advice on making the right decision, types of accommodation, finding somewhere to live and paying for a deposit and rent.

If you’re leaving care, then you can talk to your social worker or leaving care worker, who will help and support you through finding somewhere to live and applying for financial help.

Homelessness

Most people think of homelessness as sleeping rough on the streets, but you may also need help if you are facing eviction, sleeping on friend’s floors or in your car, or suffering violence in your home.

The local authority may have a duty to house you but this is a very complicated area so it is best to seek advice from a local advice centre before applying for housing.

A DVD has been produced and created by young people in Crewe that have all experienced homelessness under the age of 16.  Full project details can be downloaded below or follow the link to play the video.

Tenant’s Rights

If you are experiencing problems with your landlord, then get help from your local advice centre immediately! The law on private renting is very complicated and so it is best to seek advice from an expert. In the meantime, keep copies of any letters sent and note any phone calls made (including time and date) and show this to your adviser.

We produce many publications that are available from your adviser or local Connexions centre. However if you follow this link to Publications or the one at the top of the page you can download them yourself. Also, take a look at the following websites:
